Skin Rejuvenation Part II
In Part I we discussed the 2 main exfoliating active ingredients effectively used in skin rejuvenation: vitamin A derived creams and glycolic acid. Now on to deeper concerns affecting aging skin, the all important dermis.

Acne - Topical Therapies
A hot topic in acne therapy is how to best handle breakouts with topicals. Some don’t want to take pills; others have extenuating circumstances and can’t take pills. Most simply want to get clear fast and understandably want to incorporate whatever measures they can to maximize treatment. Topicals ...

Venus And Mars Skin Care
Thanks to John Gray’s best-seller, we already know that Men are from Mars and women are from Venus and now researchers in a growing field known as gender-based medicine are finding out that these differences are also skin deep.

Diabetic Skincare
Many medical diseases are frequently accompanied by little known skin manifestations, and never is this more likely then when considering diabetes. After all, the skin is the largest organ of the body. So it’s not surprising that diabetes, a disease that affects so many organ systems can also do a number ...

Chemical Peels
Chemical peels are one of the most popular cosmetic procedures that patients avail themselves of today. Chemical peels can give your skin a healthy, just refreshed look, or can be aggressive, taking years off of your appearance. What’s realistic? What isn’t? What can you do for yourself? And finally ...

Layering Your Products
Too much of a good thing is well, not always a good thing. Faced with overwhelming skincare options, fueled by the desire to see immediate results, consumers may resort to layering several, often unrelated, creams, lotions and other potions. Layering the skin, however, isn’t like layering a cake. ...

Choosing Skincare Products
As we are a site of information and advice, it is surprising how many misconceptions people have when trying to choose skin care products that are right for them.

Melasma
Is your natural beauty hiding behind the mask of melasma? While best known as the "mask of pregnancy", melasma literally means dark skin. You don't have to be pregnant (or even a woman!) to develop melasma. And if you think you're silently suffering alone, think again. An estimated six ...

poreFECTION
Everyone has some issue with pore size, some just more than others. Minimizing the appearance of pores is sometimes a matter of making the most of what you have. But no matter what a product claims, natural pore size is non-negotiable.

Dry Skin
Those falling leaves aren’t the only things getting dry this fall. Just take a look at your skin. To help prevent that alligator look this winter, take steps this fall to get your skin into shape after the summer sun and water exposure have...

dear doctor, i am currently using tretinoin and azeleic acid for my face which i found is very effective in addressing my pimple problem. however, i still want to lighten my face a bit. can i u...
I presume you are either outside the U.S. or are having a product especially mixed by your dermatologist since I am unaware of a tretinoin and 2 percent hydroquinone product here. If you are already using the tretinoin with the azelex, I am hesitant about you applying further tretinoin as it may be ...

I have been using Tretinoin Gel, .01% for about 3 weeks now. I want to make sure I am using products that best work with Tretinoin...in the morning, I use MD formulations cleanser for sensitive sk...
Your evening routine is ideal. Tretinoin products should be applied solo to the face after cleansing. You should be receiving some moisture from your sun protection. The dry patches you are seeing is not likely true dry skin, rather dead skin buildup, as a result of the Tretinoin use. This simply ...

Dr. Kunin, I began the obaji products two weeks ago, which included tretinoin. I noticed on your question and answer section that you discussed possible problems with tretinoin and broken capilla...
Tretinoin is only rarely associated with the formation of numerous unwanted wispy veins on teh face. Certainly you can use a Vitamin K product if you choose, but it seems like it is an added step that is unnecessary prevention unless you have the telangiectasias or are forming them. Tretinoin should ...

I am 45 years old and had Laser Resurfacing using the alexandrite and the Erbium laser combination about 6 months ago. Before my surgery I had lots of brown spots, melasma, due to many years of us...
... to skip your moisturizing by using a sunscreen and moisturizing treatment. For a rejuvenative product that may be used in conjunction with your tretinoin, I would recommend Neova Day Therapy SPF 20 with GHK Copper Peptide Complex. Although this product contains a sunscreen, consider the previous ...

My dermatologist recently placed me on this regimen: Brevoxyl-4 Creamy Wash(a.m./p.m.) Clindamax lotion (a.m.) Differin .1% cream (p.m.) I had previously been prescribed tretinoin. my question ...
Yes, you may alternate using Tretinoin and Differin at night. Products that contain Vitamin A do not thin the skin. Vitamin A will help exfoliate and rejuvenate your skin. You may be thinking that if it is exfoliating my skin does it mean that it is thinning my skin? No, because your skin regenerates ...

dearest doctor I have a very specific question regarding red post acne discoloration. I battled acne for about 9 months. After the first 2 months I was put on tretinoin. I used it for about 5 m...
I have never seen a patient in whom I suspected their topical retinoid-Retin A included- was preventing fading of their remnant acne discoloration. If it is causing you irritation and peeling, then back off on amount and frequency of use, referring to my article Retin A & Other Vitamin A Creams ...

I read through your article regarding Tretinoin. I followed your advice by using R.A. cream .025% every other night after washing with Cetaphil and waiting for 20 minutes before applying a very th...
Certainly one week of every other day treatment is not enough time to see results. The skin lightening process is unfortunately a long process. After a few weeks, if you are still not experiencing irritation, you may apply your Retin-A every night. No, Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser will not address ...

... (male sex hormones) on your skin. Allow about 3 months of continued use for your acne to clear on both the BCP and the topical antibiotic + tretinoin. Consider cleansing twice daily with MD Formulations - Facial Cleanser. The Clarisonic Skin Care Brush is an excellent skin cleansing tool that can ...

Hi, I recently read about Retisol-A on an online bulletin board. I know that this is the brand name for tretinoin in Canada, but the poster also said that it has an SPF 15 in it. Is there a tret...
To my knowledge, there is no tretinoin available in the U.S. that contains an SPF. However, tretinoin is meant to be applied at night (it increases sun sensitivity). So applying a sunscreen at bedtime is not going to provide any benefit. Do apply an SPF 30 daily when using tretinoin.

Dear Dr. Kunin: First of all, thank you for your website. It is so helpful and informative. I am 51 years old and in the 7th week of the Obagi Nu-Derm system for hyperpigmentation. I plan to do ...
You certainly may add a vitamin C product to your regimen. I recommend using Cellex-C High Potency Serum after applying Obagi Nu-Derm Toner. You may use Cellex-C High Potency Serum twice daily. This will help stimulate collagen, lessen the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and give you antioxidant ...
